Coastal Flood Advisory

* WHAT...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, up to 2 feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. For the Beach Hazards Statement, dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves expected in the surf zone.

* WHERE...Hatteras Island.

* WHEN...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, until 8 PM EDT this evening. For the Beach Hazards Statement, from 8 AM EDT this morning through this evening.

* IMPACTS...Ocean overwash impacts will improve some this morning as seas continue to subside. However, seas build some tonight through the weekend which may bring additional minor overwash in areas were dunes have been compromised. NC-12 between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe remains closed. Today's high tides are around 545 AM this morning and 6 pm this evening. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Dangerous shore break can throw a swimmer or surfer head first into the bottom causing neck and back injuries.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide, which will occur around noon today.

Flooding in Hatteras Island can cut off roads with little warning, damage homes near low-lying areas, and disrupt power and water service. Even a few inches of moving water can carry away a vehicle.

This report is based on information from NWS, monitored by Alert USA's verified emergency feed.

Alert USA anticipates a high chance of travel disruptions, elevated property risk in low-lying areas, and possible power outages while the event is active.

Recommended steps: avoid flooded roads — turn around, don't drown; move to higher ground if you are in a low-lying area; charge phones and prepare for power loss; check on family and neighbors.

Alert USA is tracking this flood event and will update this report as verified information becomes available.
