YAP — * WHAT...Large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet.
* WHERE...North facing reefs of Yap.
* WHEN...Until 5 PM ChST Tuesday.
* IMPACTS...Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Elevated long-period north swell, emanating from distant Typhoon In-fa, is moving through the region, generating hazardous surf along north facing reefs of Yap. To the southwest of Yap, overnight buoy data from Babeldaob, Palau, showed a sharp increase in 12 to 14 second swell from the northeast, with combined seas at least one foot above model guidance. This was an indicator that the long-period swell may be arriving slightly sooner than indicated by guidance, sufficient to produce hazardous surf of 9 feet, potentially reaching 10 feet tonight, along north facing reefs of Yap. For Yap, the swell is expected to be north-northeast, and about 1 to 2 feet higher than that expected for Palau, where north-facing surf looks to remain just below 9 feet.
